who is maggie?

"bookworms never go to bed alone" is a mixed media art exhibition by new zealand photographer/illustrator kelly thompson. it was launched on july 2 - july 19 by gorker gallery located in melbourne, australia.

'bookworms never go to bed alone' evokes memories of those old schoolyard days, being called names like four eyes, freckle face, surfboard, etc... and the wonderful irony of getting older and growing into that beautiful 'alternative' geeky swan.

MAGGIE by kelly thompson
i was particularly intrigued by this illustration because it truly depicts the message of the entire collection. the eyeglasses clearly portrays nerds, and how they lack social skills (ergo covered face). on the other hand, the breasts/body figure, and the stripping of the shirt, represents the ironic transformation into that "beautiful geeky swan".

what brought back my attention to maggie is that i just discovered the other day who maggie really is. little did i know, maggie is ana cuba, a photographer from barcelona, spain!

the introvert bodybuilder

i enjoyed this short film by danish director mads matthiesen. it really puts into perspective a research paper i wrote, regarding social behavior of introverts.

what i loved about dennis is that it portrays the inherent view of introversion, which isn't the common way this personality is brought about.

hell is almost over

YES! tomorrow is my last day of finals, and i'm just so HAPPY that the semester will be officially over for me. it has been a great semester to say the least.

my finals week survival kit:

haha yeah, that's about it. just me at the school library, with a textbook laying in front of me, sippin on some minute maid apple juice, as vampire weekend's tunes play on my ipod.

boey and his foam cups

last night i attempted to clean my macbook from unnecessary files that were taking up space on my hard drive and i came across a bookmark that i saved about a month ago. i believe i forgot to blog about it, so here it is.

while browsing through flickr, i stumbled on cheeming boey's photostream that consisted of drawings that instantly blew me away because of the detail and uniqueness they have. what makes boey's sharpie drawings unique is that his drawing surface is a styrofoam cup. i guess i was particularly drawn to boey's work because i used to draw on foam cups as well when i was a little boy.

dirty projectors + the roots + solange

ahh! this is what i missed when dirty projectors came to town to kick off their tour last month! well, not really... because the roots wouldn't have been performing with dirty projectors and there wouldn't be a double drum kit annihilation!

man, i'm really diggin this version of stillness is the move. dirty projectors and the roots should definitely hit the studio to record this version. it's so good!

for more listening pleasure, here's solange knowles' take on stillness is the move:

garden state's rising real estate

real estate's self-titled debut album is still fresh from the oven but it's already an instant favorite of mine. their unique nostalgic surf pop sound is a breath of fresh air and easily enjoyable. the future looks bright for garden state's rising real estate!

to listen to some more songs visit http://www.myspace.com/letsrockthebeach

you can also stream and download suburban dogs, my favorite track in the album, from: http://rcrdlbl.com/artists/Real_Estate/track/Suburban_Dogs

NEW BEACH HOUSE!

all i have to say is, WOW! i am in love with beach house's new song, NORWAY.

beach house - norway

with this debut single, it's obvious that beach house hasn't abandoned their distinct dream pop sound. except this time, it sounds like they're going to capture the attention of a much larger audience. prepare for beach house to dominate 2010! and putting baltimore on the map!

the new album, "teen dream", will be released via SUB POP! on January 26.

p.s. check out this post i made back in august about beach house. it contains a video of a show they played here in baltimore.

apply what you learn

man, i really need to start managing my finances and differentiate needs from wants. it's pretty ironic because i'm a business student and this kinda stuff is what i've been learning for the past two years lol.

thought i'd share some toe!

this video is part of a dvd that toe released in 2006. RGBDVD was recorded in a live private concert. if you enjoyed what you just saw, there are eight more awesome songs that are on the dvd. i honestly don't remember the site i bought my copy from, but you can purchase one from here:

while the bitter winds blow

bowerbirds - dark horse

On the shore of the lake,
In the great upstate of New York,
Came the call of a loon.
Cold, cold, o'er a plume of smoke.

He spoke to my center,
He spoke of the future.
He sang, "You, my friend, are alone, alone."

STUDY, SLEEP, REPEAT!

wow, what a week. i've never spent so many hours in a library my whole life. i was so busy this week with schoolwork that my school library became my new home.

i thank god for the weekend, but this coming week looks like it'll be even worse for me. with 3 exams to study for and a letter packet to complete by friday, it's a week nobody would look forward to.

o how i wish my school library had those japanese sleep capsules i heard about on discovery channel! seriously, how nifty would that be?

study for a few hours at the library, take a nap if you want, then wake up and study some more. man, why do i even study... i should be preparing a business proposal for this! haha

i want you back

man... it feels really weird when you regularly use a mac and then swith to a pc for an entire week!

what happened was... someone stole my macbook charger because i forgot it at my school library during a meeting. so, i haven't been able to do things i would normally do on my macbook. i have to say, it's been pretty miserable.

although i stopped by the apple store to pick up a new charger, i found out that it costs $80! since i'm on a pretty tight budget these days, i decided to just get one off ebay for half the retail price. thank god for ebay!

i hope i get my new charger by tomorrow.

Bon Iver & St. Vincent - “Roslyn"

mos def the best song out of the twilight - new moon soundtrack. maybe even best collab of the year? seriously, i think it's too great of a song to be part of a movie soundtrack, let alone associated with twilight crap.

one thing is for sure though... this song is exceptionally beautiful, i love it!

SON OF A!

soooo, i decided to purchase tickets for the st. vincent show on thursday!!! but, for some reason sonar's calendar showed something different for Oct. 29.

ok, no problem... i'll just type in "st. vincent sonar" on google and see if i can get tix somewhere else. i click the second search link, and guess what's the first thing that catches my attention... CANCELED! what the #!$!($!!!!!!

i missed dirty projectors on tuesday, st. vincent's date got canceled, and monday is around the corner filled with a butt load of school work! woohoo!

gotta love baseball

i'm not gonna lie, i've been saying it since july, the mets have been a disappointment once again. i know they've been out of the race since the summer, but i love baseball! ...which is why i've been watching the ALCS and NLCS.

as much as i want a dodgers-yankees world series matchup, it looks like the phillies aren't going to be dethroned of their NL champs crown... the dodgers just can't seem to get it done. as for the yankees, it's expected of them to make it to the fall classic... so, it's just a matter of time.

but seriously! i hate the phillies!!! hate hate hate hate hate them. yes, it's because i'm a mets fan and i've grown to despise phillies fans lol kidding. but also because the phillies are a really good team, it makes me hate them even more!

one thing is for sure though... the girardi era is here and the yankees are back to dominate the baseball world. new york, get ready for 27!

i'm a sucker for british female singers haha

ahh, such a great cover of ellie goulding's guns and horses by a girl named kate mcgill. seriously, british female singers have amazing voices!!!

ellie goulding's voice is memorable

watch out for ellie goulding! this british chick has such a lovely voice it just gets stuck in your head!

the only thing that i find a downer about her is that her music is electro pop. i really think it doesn't complement her voice at all, but i guess it's what sells these days in the UK?

instead of being compared to la roux or little boots, i think she would be a much better artist making music in the lines of fiest, regina spektor, or sia.

GO FORTH

for the past few days, i've noticed a new tv ad by levi's, which i believe is there latest ad campaign. the ad caught my interest because i felt something special about it. it was more than just advertising... it was art, it was poetry.

however, i honestly did not understand the concept of the campaign until i did some research online. it looks like levi's is trying to inspire people with this new campaign, as well as pay tribute to the company's roots. despite much criticism, i think it's a great campaign.

"AMERICA"
this was the commercial i saw on tv. unlike the one below, this commercial didn't translate well to me because i couldn't figure out what the poem or the ad itself had to do with jeans.

"PIONEERS! O PIONEERS!"

both excerpts are from poems by an american poet named walt whitman. what's really interesting is that the voice you hear in the commercials is actually from original wax recordings of whitman reading his poems.

to learn more about the campaign, visit the website http://goforth.levi.com/

i've got a fever

i'm seeing a trend here. i just realized that my last 5 posts on the blog have been about music haha. anyways... what have i been up to? i have to say, i'm not starting the month of october pretty well. unlike september, october has been lame so for. i'm starting to feel the pressure of school and i haven't been feeling well as of late. i think i've caught the fever. i was feeling just fine friday night when i went out, but when i got home, i was wrecked... and saturday morning wasn't better. but yeah, good thing this week is gonna be lightweight.

september, you were fun! thanks to TU. seriously.

however.... first track from VW's new album contra...

i have to say, i'm not liking it too much.. it's kinda disappointing, but it's good to hear a new tune by VW. is it just me or does the song remind you of the rugrats?! lol. i'm really hoping for more guitar on the other tracks.

if you dig it, it's up for free download at VW's website.

BAND OF OUTSIDERS!!!

of all the different spring 2010 men's collections i have seen for new york fashion week, band of outsiders is my personal favorite. i love the collection because it correlates with my sense of style these days.
